Last night the Ladywood ladies were lucky enough to catch a show of one of our favourite bands The Belle Game and be introduced to a fantastic new act (to our ears anyways) Half Moon Run. Republik was packed last night and the crowd was incredibly receptive to the musical stylings of both acts. Half Moon Run is a little like Citizen Kope mixed with a little Radiohead, but without any of that pesky pretentiousness that comes from years of headliner fame. The bands complex arrangements draw on both classical and modern compositions and are striking to hear and see during their live shows. Particularly Conner Molander- the rambunctious keyboardist and backup vocalist whose stage anctics and wildly flailing hair are a thing to behold. Devon Portielje's voice is remarkable and goes well with the folky harmonies and electronic soundscapes that the band has mastered. At times moody and introspective and others goofy and enthusiastic, the live show these guys put on was engaging and moving, and I encourage you too catch them on their North American tour if they stop by your city! Dates can be found here. Their debut album Dark Eyes is below, and while every track has something to say, my favourite is She Wants to Know a pop/rock love song that really lets Protielje's vocal chops show.
