And lastly, but most importantly, you must run around Stanley Park while listening to We're New Here, an amazing collaboration album between the great Gil Scott-Heron and remixing genius Jamie XX (download torrent here or stream here). Jamie XX incorporates his own electronic instrumentals to the original Scott-Heron vocals which perfectly recontextualizes these old jazzy tracks for today's music scene. My favorite track, obviously called "Running", fuses Scott-Heron's gritty and well-worn voice with Jamie XX synth lines and bass drops.
Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) was an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and '80s. In 2010, after a 16 year hiatus where he struggled with drug addiction, Scott-Heron released an album I'm New Here which featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social, political and personal issues of the time. It's so great that remixing artists like Jamie XX allow our generation to connect with old music gems by reworking them. Great artists like Scott-Heron can now be more appreciated by us youngsters who maybe wouldn't have come across his music. Thank you Jamie and Gil...and I'll say it again...high fives for collaboration.
Enjoy the musical magic that these two artists produce and I hope it urges you to get outside and run.
ps. Jamie XX will be performing at Coachella as a solo artist and with his band the XX. #cannotcontainmyexcitement
