Last month the Vancouver-based indie electronic duo, HUMANS, released their highly anticipated album, Noontide through Hybridity Music. It's been three years since we've heard anything new from the talented Mr. Ricq and Dr. Slade, but after listening to the whole album, you'll understands why. Noontide is an addictive compilation of eleven carefully constructed tracks, each one unique yet still containing their signature mark. The album needs to be listened to from start to finish (sans shuffle) because it takes you on a ride. It starts off with "Tell Me", their single, which has catchy electro-pop elements and features Slades' dreamy vocals. The music video they released for the track is entertaining as it features the duo, in puppet form, drinking a magical octopus-smoothie-concoction that opens their creative minds and takes them on a journey through space and time. I hope its a tribute to how this album was made...
For me, HUMANS music represents a much needed evolution in electronic dance music. The songs are catchy, dancey and have more depth then previous work. Each track successfully builds this anticipation over 5-7 minutes and delivers a powerful punch, which shows how the artists have matured and honed their music making skills. "Ennoi", my favourite song, is a perfect example of this, repeating a simple yet effective line "you just keep me waiting" over seven minutes of musical genius.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of their tour - click here for more information. Their live shows are amazing and energetic and are the reason I fell in love with their music. If you haven't yet checked out HUMANS, start with their debut album Avec Mes Mecs and then hit play on my personal favourite, "De Ciel" off their sophomore album Traps. Their music does not disappoint. - Hannah
