I'm pretty sure Mumford and Sons and Brett Dennin made a love child... and it was Vance Joy.
Most recently known for his ukulele riddled single "Riptide" from his debut EP Dream Your Life Away, expect to see more from this folk-pop stud in the future. This single has gotten so much attention in recent months with pop icons the likes of Taylor Swift already giving her stamp of approval of the Australian vocalist with a cover of the single. On the other end of the spectrum, FlicFlac put their own twist on a remix of the same song. Definitely worth a listen.
Despite the fact that his performance last Friday at Republik left me swooning like teenage girl, it was clear that he had a similar effect on the crowd at the intimate venue. In a nightclub that I’m used to shaking my tail feather to high energy performances from artists like Klinglande, KYGO and Bonobo, it was refreshing to see a subdued crowd completely captivated by Joy's whimsical vocals and the simplicity of his clean cut sound.
There is something about his impassioned crooning that conjures up some nostalgic inklings, delivering you back to that heartwarming scene in your favorite movie or recollection of a formative romance. I can just picture Matthew Mcconaughey on a scooter chasing me across the Manhattan Bridge right now as I recount Joy's set listening to "You're Mess Is Mine." (And yes, my favorite movie is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days..). There is a certain soothing authenticity to his sound and seductive lyrics that makes you want him to be the one to write the soundtrack to your life.
Can’t wait to see what Vance has in store for his adoring fans but in the meantime his jams will be making their long overdue debut on my Soulful Sunday Funday playlist. -M
