You think you are Canadian, then you go to a rave in a hockey rink.
The first ever Secret Solstice Festival took place in Reykjavik this weekend from June 20-22. We were lucky to get a deal on some Friday passes and go check it out. Disclosure was good and Eats Everything was pretty awesome, but the highlight was definitely the festival itself.
Just people watching would have been enough. Because it never gets dark here, the energy of this festival is a totally different ball game. The place wasn't crowded, but everyone was just having a time, with enough space to get down.
Everyone just felt lucky to be there it seemed. At the main stage, Daniel Pearce (Eats Everything) yelled 'Conga line!' and without hesitation, the entire crowd had their hands on each other's shoulders and were dancing around past the stage.
Then we went to Hell. Here, inside the hockey arena, DJs were scheduled to play until 5am. Again, a pretty crazy experience to leave the darkness and strobe lights only to find complete daylight outside.
For those who picked up weekend passes, there were day long pool parties at Reykjavik's biggest outdoor pool right next door (with the acid trip water slide we visited earlier this week). Saturday was shaping up to be a good jam, with Banks and Massive Attack on the docket.
On our walk home, we chatted with an Icelandic author who was reviewing the festival. Obviously. Everyone here is some kind of genius.
Check it out. If it happens again, it should not be missed. http://www.secretsolstice.is
