Fat Freddy’s Drop are a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues and techno. In 2013, the band released their fifth studio album called Blackbird, which I highly recommend you check out. The video for Blackbird was directed by Jon Baxter from Perceptual Engineering, who built a 3D model of a blackbird and then set about making it fly and multiply. Baxter's philosophical approach for Blackbird aligns with the darkness of the lyrics by Freddy's vocalist Joe Dukie. "The Blackbird in my garden is often the lingering fear that attacks my creative process and inhibits action. But this can turn out to be the very same force that allows magic to happen, the very thing that gives momentum to dreams and allows us to break through to the other side", Baxter said. That's some wise advice, take it!
Watch this coughy little Grandma listen to Dubstep for the first time. Don't get me wrong I can definitely dance to some dirty dub but I can't imagine what the older generations think. This video is the best because this little lady is so darn cute and she tries really hard to give Dubstep a good listen. -R
Last night at Hifi A Tribe Called Red played some fine Pow Wow/club sounds and spins. The three Native American DJs from Ottawa mix beats that range from dirty dub, to electronic hooks and pow wow chanting. The raw and unique sound of A Tribe Called Red makes them a treat to watch and even more fun to stomp your dancing shoes to. Listen in and when you get the chance go see them live!
