This morning I woke up with a beautiful feeling of satisfaction, and its not what you're thinking dirty birds because its all about the music. Instantly I remembered the amazing show I saw last night and it all made sense. Current Swell was all about their music this past evening when they brought down the house at Republik. These boys literally blew me away. They were a head smashing, boot stomping good time. Their instrumental prowess far exceeds the average musical bear. Every song they played had so much energy and heart it made me see these guys in a new light. It's extraordinary that live performances connect you to musicians in that special way. I was touched by the band's attention to detail for everything they were doing. While interviewing Scott, the lead singer, he emphasized how much playing live music means to them. He said "once you have the energy of the crowd it helps a lot. It's fun to play with people, but its fun to have a lot of people love what you're doing and feed off of that." I asked if its disappointing to play for an audience who isn't paying attention and he said most definitely. "I don't like people who go to festivals because its cool to go to festivals. You go to festivals to listen to awesome bands; you go to shows to listen to awesome bands. You don't go to shows because that's what everyone else is doing." Scott said he would prefer to have 10 people in the crowd who want to see their music versus 100 people in the crowd who don't really care. We both agreed that much of North American music culture has been focused around partying and sometimes we lose track of what music means to us. We are obsessed with consuming ,and our music aspirations have trended towards that. In Calgary there was no distracted eyes in the audience as each and every person stared intently into the souls of these boys from Victoria. At one point ever person in the crowd put their arms around each other and a sea of human chains was created. You could feel so much love in the crowd as we all swayed to the soft silky sounds floating across the stage. With a roaring audience and a sold-out show I bet Current Swell felt the love as much as we did.
