So Baz Lurhmann is this kind of dark and twisty theatrical genius, who tends to use glitter as a secondary player in most of his films. He's the kind of genius that makes you fall in love with a sequined fueled musical about French prostitutes when you swore you would never fall in love with a sequined fueled musical about French prostitutes. He's the man that set a Shakespearean drama in Venice beach, with characters in silver mesh sweaters and Hawaiian shirts dropping iambic pentameter like it was the most natural thing in the world. His latest silver screen endeavour is the literary classic, The Great Gatsby, and he's recruited industry heavyweight Hova to produce the soundtrack. HOVAAAA!!!! While, the releases we've heard so far from the snippets of the trailer are lush and luxurious, including bits from the XX and Florence and the Machine, the latest release is the Beyonce cover of Amy Winehouse's love/hate ballad- Back to Black and I'm just not sure about it......actually I really, really don't like it.
Maybe its the super annoying promo overlay, or that it just seems a little too soon to be covering an Amy Winehouse song, whatever it is its just not doing it for me. I know the whole point is to add some "new-age musical sparkle to the classic Jazz Age love story", but I think this track is just lacking a sense of authenticity. Mostly because its basically a blatant publicity grab for the film, and the choice to use a very modern song and sell it as Jazz wrapped in a contemporary package seems somehow false. Promo's for the song have said that B’s version is quite different from the original and Jay explained too that the song would be “interpreted with a modern twist”. Except that in the song, Amy (and now B) sing: He left no time to regret, kept his dick wet, which seems like a pretty modern sentiment to me already.
The trailer is below and while I may not be super stoked on our lord and saviour Beyonce's, newest release this movie looks absolutely sumptuous. I mean look at all those sequins!
