Day 1 of Badlands taught me a lesson about who to trust when consulting the world wide web for outfit choices. I naturally went with the topshop advertisements for primo festival attire but mother nature bitch slapped me in the face when she decided to splatter mud all overt my bare body. Calgary has been fighting with rain for a few weeks now and unfortunately the festival had another bout of heavy downpours. This meant Badlands attendants were dance partying in flying mud and slippery slopes...but guess what IT WAS SO FUN! It honestly made for a night of atypical moments with die hard music fans.
Matt and Kim: Gave an unforgettable high energy performance start to finish. Amidst the rain and cloudy skies the duo jumped around stage, banged the drums, and hammered the keys. Its hard to keep a crowd on their feet when you're performing alongside heavy electronic DJs but Matt and Kim held their own. They dominating the scene with crisp vocals, Kim jumping into the crowd and crowd favorites such a "Daylight." Wish they were playing again tonight!
Steve Aoki: The man has a name and luscious long locks every singe person who listens to electronic music recognizes. His collaboration list includes Afrojack, Tiesto and The Bloody Beetroots. His reputation for being a party animal didn't falter last night as he head smashed the crowd into a haze of dancing hips and swaying arms. Mud was flying everyone as the crowd got hyped and and the front line got an entire cake smashed into their faces. I mean if your Mr.Aoki why not throw a full cake in someone's face? Right?!
Kaskade: Lasers galore covered the crowd as the midnight air was filled beats from this main stage man. Kaskade has played Ultra Music Festival, Coachella and Tomorrowland so he's a veteran at these types of events. Badlands was more than blessed to have such a big name end it's Friday night line up and the crowd was ecstatic for every moment. People jammed with Kaskade's wicked stage presence and overwhelming light show. Great end to the slippery night.
What's good tonight: Adventure Club, Excision, Pretty Lights..Come on down kids.
