This past week The Penelopes released their video for 'Time to Shine,' and it's a graphically dark tale . For all the people this video has a real life connection with, my heart goes out to you.
"Starring French actress/musician Soko and directed by Mattias Johansson, the video was equally inspired by the turmoil Axel and Vincent faced growing up in the rough neighbourhoods of the Paris outskirts. Their synth-driven sound provides the background for this dark short film that tells a story of obsession, violence, and claustrophobia before a great escape." -Rayray
Shakey Graves, the dazzlingly lovely Texas gentlemen has given the internet the tasties of treats- A little taste of his upcoming second full length album, which comes out an achingly long time from now in early October. The track “Dearly Departed” is a duet with the cherub cheeked Esme Patterson, and trust me when I say this little track will change your life. The simplistic song, “Dearly Departed” is about those lingering memories attached to any home after a relationship ends and is reminiscent of country duets of yore. (They’re also the two most adorable things on the planet, and that includes that includes puppies.) Below is the studio version and the live version recorded at South by Southwest that I tend to like a little bit better. -C
Why Not Y recently released their first single with great reviews and a plan to release an EP on Aug.27th. Their track, 'Young,' leaves the listener with a pleasant feeling of happiness and an aftertaste of catchy Pop. Check out their Facebook page to learn more about the group here. -Rayray
Ladywood caught up with singer/songwriter Miranda DiPerno who is one part jazz, one part R&B and a whole lot of soul. This 22-year old native from Vancouver, BC moved to New York to study music and make a name for herself. Drawing inspiration from the stark contrast in west coast living as compared to the nonstop energy of NYC, Miranda's debut 6-track EP, Home, is a beautiful compilation that showcases her talents not only as a strong vocalist but as a songwriter. She has it all and great things are in store for this up-and-coming beauty. Read the interview here.
Toronto is heating up again!
Is it the humidity and +30 weather? Naw. Is it because the Blue Jays are streaking? Haha definitely not.
The city is getting hawt as our favorite disco duo from Toronto is back releasing an amazing cover of one of my personal favorite Strokes tunes “Last Night”. They teamed up with the great Craig Stickland who drops some groovy vocals on the track. This is the perfect way to roll into summer, two-stepping with confidence to the freshest beats on the scene. Kick back, press play, and enjoy!- Marty D
Jess Glynne is a British singer/songwriter who is making waves across the music scene. You might recognize her voice from the Clean Bandit banger "Rather Be" or Route 94's singe "My Love". Jess recently released her debut single "Right Here" which has charted number 6 in the UK. At only 24 years of age, this red-headed beauty is performing at a string of music festivals this summer. Enjoy and keep an eye out for her. - Hannah
Thomas Jack is a sensational producer that just keeps making stunningly beautiful music that just kind of soothes my soul. Calgary has had a busy few weeks of social intoxication thanks to the Stampede so use some of Thomas Jacks tranquil sounds, including his brand new kick-ass Tropical House Volume 5 mix, to ease you back into a (somewhat) healthy lifestyle. On a side note this young genius will be doing his first Calgary show ever on August 24th so stay tuned to Ladywood for some exclusives about the gig. All the love. -C
Today we have a triple hit of new music to enlighten your eardrums. Each track boasts a unique and surprising dark and shadowy element that makes these renditions completely unique and completely listenable. And major shout-out to our guest poster Shim Shady who's exquisite taste in music and in life keeps Ladywood coming back for more.
Track 1- Dollhouse was released in April, but this new Jai Wolf Remix is turning heads.
Track 2- Jai Wolf is an up and coming 22 year old New York producer who is quickly building up an arsenal of electronic edits (see his mix of Best Friend by Foster the People below).
Track 3- Melanie Martinez began her career as a contestant on the voice, where she showcased her ability to uniquely twist top 40 hits such as Toxic by Britney Spears (if you haven't heard this one, definitely have a listen).
On a side note: Is dark-pop becoming a genre? Cause this songs got me thinking of Lana Del Rey & Lorde.
Mr. Savoretti is the master of creating beautiful stories within the lyrics of his songs. It takes a true artist to connect so perfectly with their audience and he does it so well. Enjoy in the simple emotions of these songs my friends because they will take you on a journey. -R
