Check out some mixes from The Golden Pony. They claim to "have afros and make disco." I can dig it..
We don't normally post about movies on Ladywood, but after watching the trailer for Ben Stiller's new movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and it's stunning imagery and soundtrack, I just had to post it for you guys. Based on a 1939 short story of the same name by James Thurber, Stiller plays Mitty, a LIFE magazine employee and daydreamer who fantasizes about a life much more exciting than his own, a feeling I'm sure we can all relate too. Overlaid with Of Monsters and Men's Dirty Paws and with almost no dialogue, the trailer is a rich and emotional little snippet of what is sure to be an Oscar worthy film. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and keep dreaming!
Here is an absolutely stunning cover of Crystal Castle`s song Untrust Us by Capital Children’s Choir.
We wanted to cover Crystal Castles because we liked the idea of replacing their synths and percussion using only our voices and hands. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios.
Congrats to one of our favorite up and coming Canadian producers Natural Animal for the release of their new tune “Who You Are”. Crushing the HypeM charts and reaching number 1 this past weekend, we couldn’t be prouder. This song closely describes the ethos of the band and follows the general vibe of their new EP which is completely free and can be downloaded in the link below. Word on the street is that they have quite the provocative music video coming out so get excited! We sure can’t wait as these guys are a riot.
*Big shout out to M for another great post! Offical guest blogger status achieved, you may pass go and collect $200. Also if you can name the British philosopher that Ntrl Animal samples in this song, Ladywood will send you and a friend to our next event on us! Check out our new Ladywood calender to see all the upcoming events!
What are you Calgarians doing right now? If you aren't already listening to dance tunes while shaking your booty I know exactly where you should be. Tonight at Hifi SOLIDISCO are playing, so that means you beautiful people need to be there! Here are two of their tracks that should do the job of convincing you to go party. I have to admit that the Icona pop track is a mad guilty pleasure because even though the lyrics are so bad, like the song says...I love it.
It may seem like an odd pairing at first, but within a few short seconds of listening to this track you realize how well these two artists fit together. Kavinsky (known for his creepy yet emotional track Nightcall from the film Drive) with his 80's coated synth sounds, mixes perfectly with the Weeknd's spectral falsetto. This artful collaboration helps prove why Kavinsky is considered by many as France’s finest electronic dance music auteur and why the Weeknd continues to stay relevant in an industry that, recently, seems to be flooded with baby makin' music (I'm talking to you Robin Thicke).
This bold collaboration, along with remixes from A-Trak and Surkin, was released yesterday as a part of the Odd Look EP. Keep your eye out for a full review coming soon on Ladywood and check out our latest full album reviews on our Reviews page.
I always wonder what artists are doing in their down time. I understand down time doesn't really exist for them but I wonder what they do when they aren't scheduled to tour or its been several months since they have realeased an album. Pondering over this I got to wondering what the Stone bro/sis duo were up to...
Angus: I'm always very surprised when I hear words coming out of Mr.Stone's mouth. He gives me the impression of a man who has taken a lifelong vow of silence so I get thrown off when I hear him chatting in interviews. He's currently promoting his album Broken Brights, and he finished touring in Europe a few months ago. In less scheduled moments Angus likes to do impromptu photo-shoots (looking very rugged like) and musical collarborations with people like Kelly Slater. That's right my friends Kelly Slater. If you needed to feel more insignificant about your life, especially when comparing to people who surf for a living or produce films out in the beautiful ocean, here's Kelly Slater and Angus Stone making a song together. Its on the soundtrack for the movie Here and Now which was out June.18th. The trailer for this movie, which was shot all in one day, is sitting below the video of Kelly and Mr.Stone making a song together. Enjoy

In full disclosure.....I was a synchronized swimmer for most of my life, and yes I have shellacked my hair with gelatin on more than one occasion. Buzzfeed did a hilarious expose on the terrifying faces of synchronized swimmers after the last Olympics, which to be perfectly honest, was a pretty accurate representation of the sport. I mean, while incredibly athletically challenging and graceful, sometimes synchro swimmers make faces only a mother could love.....
Synchro is a strange, yet mesmerizing sport that has taught me more about life than any classroom ever could, so whenever I see it represented in pop culture- on TV, on movies, or in music- I relish it. Below is a video by Lightning Dust of their bittersweet love song Diamond that has some pretty hilarious synchro in it towards the end. Lightning Dust is an electro-tinged alt-pop group from Vancouver who are about to release their third full album and have embarked on an ambitious cross country tour- including a stop in Calgary on July 24th at the Palomino! So take a listen and check out some more of their beautiful synth heavy music here.
Camp Brand Goods threw a patio party Saturday at Broken City in Calgary and it was a smashing success. Great music, good people and a couple of beers created a wonderful rooftop experience. Camp Brand Goods is a clothing company hailing from this beautiful city and they have a creative mix of men and women's tshirts, fleeces and tanks; even if you have a little one they can hook you up with some toddler options. DJ Juice and the Strumbellas were the musical entertainers for the evening and I was pleasantly surprised by the music all night long. Juice kept the crowd vibing to electronic beats while the Stumbellas were toe stomping to some beautiful instrumental tracks.
If you want to check out some Camp Goods here is their website click here and watch the video below to hear the Strumbellas with their lovely track Left for Dead.
